Of Mice and Men â⬠Did George have any alternative than to shoot Lennie? Essay
Of Mice and Men recounts to the tale of two men, George and Lennie, who appear to be uncannily combined in a general public of antisocial people. Lennie is extremely tall, and exceptionally solid with huge quality, yet in addition seems to have a significant learning handicap. George is shorter, and far less solid, yet has the more noteworthy knowledge of the pair. Their friendship is uncommon, and despite the fact that George once in a while undermines Lennie that he will stroll off and leave him, George never does. George in some cases gets disappointed with Lennie and quickly accepts he would be better of with out him, so he could remain in one spot for more and spend his ââ¬Å"fifty bucks toward the month's end on what ever he wantedâ⬠. They do appear to depend on one another for more than friendship in any case. Lennie depends on George in view of his absence of knowledge, and George carries on the friendship in view of the idea that Lennie would pass on the off chance that he were not there to think about him. Lennie additionally aches for a parent figure, somebody to think about him, and somebody to one day give him something delicate to contact and a few hares to take care of. The prize George has for this is difficult to see, yet inevitably you see why they are together. Lennie speaks to organization and security to George. There was additionally a guarantee George provided for Aunt Clara, a character that is discussed pretty much nothing and never observed, that he would take care of Lennie, and that guarantee appears to mean a great deal to the two characters. Toward the finish of the novel, George is as yet paying special mind to Lennie. Lennie never hurt anybody due to being mean or remorseless, simply out of not realizing how strong he can actually be and out of resistance when he was apprehensive. George knows this. Yet, in the general public where ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ is set, the punishment for a passing is demise, and any individual who is feeble, injured or old with no utilization any more drawn out was murdered. This is demonstrated unmistakably when Candyââ¬â¢s hound, his best buddy was shot. This is practically foretelling of what will occur. There are three sets on the farm, Curley and his significant other, George and Lennie, and Candy and his canine. Curleyââ¬â¢s hand is squashed by Lennie, and Lennie later slaughters his significant other, finishing off with Lennieââ¬â¢s demise. Candyââ¬â¢s hound is shot when different men accept he has no more use on the farm. After all that Candy and his pooch had experienced and all the long periods of faithful help that his alleged closest companion had performed for Candy, when compelled into a choice, he decided to oppose his devoted friend and settle on the choice on when he should kick the bucket. Candy later is irate that he didn't murder his pooch himself. George has a similar conviction than Candy, when he slaughtered Lennie he appears to restrict that conviction. George realizes that in this general public, when they discover Lennie they will hang, cudgel, beat and torment him to death. George doesn't need this story to end in a difficult passing for his deep rooted buddy, and along these lines he doesn't need Curley and the gathering of other farm hands to discover him alive, on the grounds that the outcomes will be far more terrible. George understands that different alternatives are to send Lennie from his side into a psychological establishment where he would be a risk to himself and a peril to other people, or to rush to the following town once more, to finish the cycle again and to have again another person executed and to again need to run from another posse. George understands that they are both not choices he is eager to attempt. George likewise understands that Lennie will one day understand that they will never have their own territory, and the fantasy about accommodating themselves will never work out as expected. ââ¬Å"All kinââ¬â¢s a vegetables in the nursery, and on the off chance that we need a little whisky we can sell a couple of eggs or something, or some milk. Weââ¬â¢d jusââ¬â¢ live there. Weââ¬â¢d have a place thereâ⬠(p. 54). There will never be any bunnies to tend to and if George and Lennie stay together they will never have enough cash, since they are consistently on the run. George didn't murder Lennie in a spirit of meanness, not in light of his negligent, honest, act had run Georgeââ¬â¢s any expectations of having a little homestead. Basically in light of the fact that different choices were so much more awful. Lennie kicked the bucket accepting that one-day they would have their own ranch, with bunnies and horse feed and enough to live on for them both. An upbeat spot, with the sun and the downpour and nobody to supervisor them around. Only a spot where they would have a place. Also, Lennie kicked the bucket accepting the fantasy that numerous other men had passed on longing for. In any case, there are different sides to the story, and individuals additionally accept that George ought to have attempted to save Lennieââ¬â¢s life. Because of his obvious absence of devotion to Lennie and his narrow-mindedness he decided to take Lennieââ¬â¢s life. It is huge to the story how George chooses to murder his companion. He doesn't allow Lennie to escape from his followers however rather he shoots him in the rear of the head simply like what had been never really hound. This shows how, after the entirety of the faithfulness and love that both of these animals had given to their individual ââ¬Å"friendsâ⬠, both of the unrivaled animals conclude that they donââ¬â¢t need them any more and decide to end the ruled animals lives in a not exactly good way. Anyway in Candyââ¬â¢s case it was progressively a reason for not having the option to face different men on the farm, however in Georgeââ¬â¢s case, it was George either attempting to save Lennie, or to abandon the friendship in view of avarice and the conviction that the all inclusive dream was possible without Lennie despite his good faith. At the point when different men discover George, he controls the circumstance further, disclosing to them that he killed Lennie out of self-preservation when he wrested the firearm that Lennie probably took from him. He frees himself of any fault for the slaughtering. Thin faculties Georgeââ¬â¢s sentiment of regret over the circumstance. Notwithstanding, the book closes with Carlson asking why George is disturbed, indeed exhibiting that different men can't grasp the obligation of companionship among George and Lennie. In spite of the fact that Steinbeck isn't attempting to state that you can never confide in the individuals that you call your companions, he is stating to be cautious about the individuals who consider you a companion yet just consider themselves while saying it. I, in any case, don't accept that George slaughtered Lennie out of avarice, I accept that the regret George appears towards Lennieââ¬â¢s demise is substantial and enough verification of that. I envision George in two different ways toward the finish of this novel. My desire is that George some way or another gets enough cash to purchase his homestead with Candy, and they live the fantasy. The plausible closure is that George keeps living, attempting to scratch enough cash to one day have his ranch, yet surrenders trust, understands the fantasy will never occur and follows different men, spending his fifty bucks in the cathouse and drink, to suffocate his distresses.

Ready for some tennis
Ready for some tennis Three days until the US Open officially begins! As an engineer, Ill give some numbers: 125 = number of years the US Open has been around 1,100,000 = prize money for the Mens/Womens tournament winner 4 = number of Grand Slam tournaments, the US Open is one of them (along with the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and French Open) -1998 = last time that any guy won back-to-back US Open titles (Federer won last year, hes looking to win again) Ok, thats enough pretending that I know about tennis I am predicting a Federer vs. Roddick final (would anyone like a wager?) Speaking of Andy Roddick, at the beginning of August, my roommate, Anna, came to visit me and we went to see a semifinal match of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. We crossed our fingers that we would be able to see Andy and fortunately we did! He played Paradorn Srichaphan, a 26 year-old from Thailand. After the first set, where Andy slammed four straight aces, we got a little worried that we had wasted our money on a blow-out. But luckily Paradorn learned to read Andys serve and the game heated up. In the end, Andy won 7-6, 6-2 (and he later beat James Blake for the championship.) I must note that the action that got the most audience support was not a record breaking serve, but when Andy changed his shirt between sets. Cest la vie. Im including some pictures; some of them were taken at the end of the game as the players were exiting the courts. Unfortunately, we didnt get any signatures, but we were happy just to hear them and see them up close. By the way, if youre interested in playing tennis at MIT, you have plenty of opportunities. Theres a tennis gym class (all levels), mens and womens varsity teams, as well as plenty of intramural teams.

Heart Of Darkness By Joseph Conrad And The Film Apocalypse...
Dark, suspenseful, and altogether brutal is what describes ââ¬Å"Heart of Darknessâ⬠by Joseph Conrad and the film adaption Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola. A short novella published in 1899, ââ¬Å"Heart of Darknessâ⬠centers on the journey taken by the narrator Marlow up the Congo River with a Belgian trading company. Upriver he encounters the mysterious ivory trader, Kurtz and is brought face to face with corruption and despair. Set in the Vietnam War, the film Apocalypse Now follows the central character, U.S. Army special operations officer Captain Benjamin L. Willard, of MACV-SOG, on a mission to kill the radical and seemingly psychotic U.S. Army Special Forces Colonel Walter E. Kurtz. Coppola draws on Conradââ¬â¢s characters in order to create Captain Willard and Colonel Kurtz, but in adapting these dynamic characters he changes the internal and external forces both main characters endure. Coppola creates interesting parallels between Willard and Marlow; Marlowââ¬â¢s voyage downriver to the heart of Africa and Willardââ¬â¢s mission on the Nung River in Vietnam. Both men are on journeyââ¬â¢s to the darkest of places: journey into ââ¬Å"selfâ⬠, and the discoveries to be made there. Cardiothoracic ratio and the maximum transverse diameter of the heart Free Essays
string(114) " distinct bulbus cordis in contrast to the inflow portion which arises from ventricular tissues \(Malcolm 1977\)\." CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION Cardiothoracic ratio is the maximum transverse diameter of the heart divided by the greatest internal diameter of the thoracic cage (from inside of rib to inside to rib). (Herring, 2003). We will write a custom essay sample on Cardiothoracic ratio and the maximum transverse diameter of the heart or any similar topic only for you Order Now In normal people, the cardiothoracic ratio is usually less than 50% but, in black people up to 55% may still be normal (Sutton 1988). Therefore the cardiothoracic ratio is a handy way of separating most normal heart from most abnormal heart. (Herring, 2003). A heart can be greater than 50% of the cardiothoracic ratio and still be a normal heart (Herring, 2003). This can occur if there is an ultra cardiac cause of cardiac enlargement which include; 1. Pectus excavatum deformity 2. Straight back syndrome 3. Inability to take deep breath because of obesity, pregnancy etc. (Herring 2003). The ratio may also increase in elderly. This may be to an in folding of ribs, reducing the thoracic component of the ratio (Sutton 1985). The transverse diameter of the heart can be measured directly on a radiograph at 1.83m (6ft) upper limit of 16cm for men and 15cm for women are usual (Sutton 1985). The advantage of a single measurement of that it can be held to be compared in serial films. At difference of 2cm is held to be a significant change. This applies only when the heart is originally normal (Sutton 1985). Normally, the third of the cardiac shadow lies to the left of the midline and one-third to the right (Berry 2003). In normal individual, the transverse diameter of the heart on PA film is usually in the range of 11.5cm to 15.5cm. it lies less than 11.5cm in about 5% of people and only rarely exceeds 15cm (Benny 2003). The maximum transverse diameters of the cardiac shadow at the chest radiograph film consist mainly of the diameters of the left ventricle and right atrium as shown by radiograph (Hada, 1995). The ratio is influenced by many factors, not only left ventricular dilatation or hypertrophy but also dilatation of the other cardiac chambers and aorta, rotation and shift of the heart, respiratory phase, body posture and measurement errors (Hada, 1995). Anatomy of the Heart Development of the Heart The development of the heart begins in the middle of the third week from the cardiac progenitor cells in the epiblast, immediately lateral to the primitive streak. Cells destined to form cranial segment of the heart, the outflow tract migrate first and cells forming more caudal portion, right ventricle, left ventricle and sinus venosus respectively migrate in sequential order. Series of developmental processes later leads to formation of a horse-shoe shaped endothelial lined tube surrounded by myoblasts in the cardiogenic field. In addition to cardiogenic region, other clusters of angiogenic cells appear bilaterally, parallel and close to the midline of the embryonic shield. Theseclusters acquire a lumen and form a pair of longitudinal vessel called dorsal aorta. These vessels later gained connections via the aortic arches with the horseshoe shaped region that form the heart tube. As the embryo folds cephalocaudally, it also folds laterally and as a result, the caudal regions of the paired cardiac primordial merge their caudal most ends. Simultaneously, the crescent part of the horse- shoe shaped area expands to form the future outflow tract and ventricular regions. Thus, the heart becomes a continuous expanded tube consisting of an inner endothelial lining an outer myocardial layer. The heart at this stage consist of three layers (a) Endocardium ââ¬â forming the inner endothelial lining of the heart. (b) Myocardium- forming the muscular wall (c) Epicardium or Visceral pericardium- covering the outside of the tube. Various parts of the heart later develop from the fused heart tube. (Sadler T. W 2000). Gross Anatomy of the heart The normal heart lies within the pericardial sac in the middle of the thorax slightly to the left of the middle (Sokolow 1979). The low pressure right atrium and right ventricle occupy the anterior portion of the heart and the higher pressure left ventricle and atrium his posteriorly (Sokolow 1977). The long axis of the heart from the apex of the left ventricle to the root of the aorta runs upwards and backward at an angle of about 300 from the horizontal plane and 450 from the sagital plane of the body (Sokolow 1977). The resisting and position of the heart vary with the build of the patient and with respiration. It assumes a more vertical position during inspiration in tall thin persons and more horizontal position during respiration in persons with heavier body build. (Sokolow1977). 1.2 THE CHAMBERS OF THE HEART The heart consists of four (4) chambers; that is the right and left atria and the right and left ventricle. 1.2.1 The Right Atrium The right atrium consists of two (2) embryological portions. (Malcolm 1977). The most posterior thin walled portion into which the vena cava and coronary sinus empty in from form the sinus venosus and is compose of similar tissues to that of the great vein. (Malcolm 1977). The more anterior muscular portion includes the right arterial appendage and the tricuspid valve ring (Malcolm 1977) The fossa ovalies lies in the site of the foramen ovale (Malcolm 1977). This inter-atrial communication within which is present during fetal life permits the flow of oxygenated blood from the inferior vena cava into the heart (Malcolm 1977). The patent foramen Ovale remain open or potentially open in about 15% of normal subjects (Malcolm 1977) but since it is a flap value which only allows flow right or left, it is normally functionally closed (Malcolm 1977). 1.2.2 THE RIGHT VENTRICLE The right ventricle is triangular in shape and forms a cresentric, shallow structure wrapped over the ventricular septum (Malcolm 1977), it can divided into a lower inflow portion containing the tricuspid valve and upper outflow tract from which pulmonary trunk arises. (Malcolm 1977). The line of demarcation between the two portions consists of bands of muscles formed by the cristasupra ventricularis (Malcolm 1977). The outflow tract of the right ventricles is derived from the embryologically distinct bulbus cordis in contrast to the inflow portion which arises from ventricular tissues (Malcolm 1977). You read "Cardiothoracic ratio and the maximum transverse diameter of the heart" in category "Essay examples" 1.2.3 THE LEFT ATRIUM The left atrium like the right is composed of a vein like portion which the pulmonary vein drains and make muscular anterior portion which includes the left atrial appendage (Malcolm 1977). Its wall is slightly thicker than that of the right atrium and the inner area corresponding to the fossa ovale can be seen on its right upper surface (Malcolm 1977). 1.2.4 THE LEFT VENTRICLE The left ventricular cavity is shaped like an egg. The base or the egg is formed by the mitral valve ring. The wall of the left ventricle accounts for about 75% of the mass of the heart. The aorta and mitral ring lies close to one another with the layer anterior mole cusp of mitral valve adjacent to the left and posterior cusp of the aortic valve (Malcolm 1977). The posterior immobile cusp of the mitral valve is shorter and together with the anterior cusp is lethered to the anterior and posterior papillary muscles in a parachute like shared by the two (2) cusps (Malcolm 1977). The interventricular septum which forms the outright anterior aspect of the left ventricle bulges into the right ventricle making the cross section of the mid portion of the left ventricle circular shape (Malcolm 1977). 1.3 EXTERNAL APPEARANCE OF THE HEART 1.3.1 ANTERIOR ASPECT As viewing anteriorly, the longest area of the surface of the heart is formed by the triangular shaped right ventricle with the pulmonary trunk arising from the apex of the triangle above and to the right of the right ventricle, one can see right atrium appendages as an ear shape structure overlying the root of the aorta (Sokolow 1997). The grove between the right atrium and ventricle (Coronary sulcus) is often filled with fat and is occupied by the right coronary artery. Above the right atrium, the superior vena cava is seen entering the right atrium from the back . The anterior aspect of the heart reveals only a small part of the left ventricle lying to the left of the right ventricle and forming the apex of the heart (Sokolow 1977). The anterior interventricular sulcus often contains fat and is occupied by the anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery (Sokolow 1977). The only portion of the left atrium visible from the front is the left atrial appendages, which lies side of the origin of the pulmonary trunk. The lungs normally covers most of the anterior surface of the heart especially during inspiration having only a small area opposed to the back of the sternum and left ribs (Sokolow 1977). 1.3.2 LEFT SIDED ASPECT When viewed from the left side, the ventricle and the left atrium occupy most of the surface of the heart (Sokolow 1977). The posterior interventricular groove separates the left ventricle above from the right ventricle below. The posterior descending branch of the right coronary artery lies in the groove. The anterior ventricular groove runs almost vertically in the view separating the left ventricle from the left atrium (Sokolow 1977). The coronary sinus and circumflex branch of the left coronary artery lies in the groove and complete the ring of blood vessels forming the bases of the corona (crown) after which the blood vessels supplying the heart are named (Sokolow 1977). 1.3.3 POSTERIOR ASPECT The back of the heart mainly on the diaphragm is largely occupied by the left atrium and ventricle plus portions of the right atrium and ventricle (Sokolow 1977). The point at which all four (4) chambers meet posteriorly as called the crux at the heart; because of the cross ââ¬â shape pattern of the blood vessels lying at the function of the posterior interventricular groove and the anterior ventricular groove (Sokolow 1977). The vessels forming the crux are; the coronary sinus and the posterior descending coronary artery. This latter vessel may be a branch of either the right or the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery depending on whether the right or left coronary artery is largely (dominant) (Sokolow 1977). The pulmonary vein enter the back of the left atrium and the pattern may vary but the two right and the left pulmonary veins are normally present (Sokolow 1977). 1.3.4 Right Side Aspect When viewed from the right side, the right atrium and ventricle occupies most of the surface (Maurice 1977). The posterior and the anterior vena cava enter the atrium at the back and the aorta runs upward from the middle of the heart (Maurice 1977). The outflow tract of the right ventricle and the pulmonary trunk form the upper border of the heart in this view (Maurice 1977). 1.4 THE HEART WALL The heart wall is composed of the three layers of tissue, namely the; epicardium, myocardium and endocardium (Stephen 1988). The epicardium and the visceral pericardium are two names for the same structure. The sinus pericardium is called epicardium when considered a part of the heart and the visceral pericardium when considered a part of the pericardium (Stephen 1988). 1.4.2 THE MYOCARDIUM This is the thick middle layer of the heart, which composed of cardiac muscle cells and is responsible for the ability of the heart to contract, (Stephen 1988). 1.4.3 THE ENDOCARDIUM This is the smooth inner surface of the heart chamber, which consist of the simple squamous epithelium over a layer or connective tissue (Stephen 1988). The smooth inner surface allows blood to move easily through the heart. The heart valves are formed by a fold as the endocardium, making a double layer of endocardium with connective tissue in between (Stephen 1988). 1.5 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY The objectives of the study are To measure the heart diameter, thoracic diameter and cardiothoracic ratio of normal individual in University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. To give the comparison between the heart diameter, thoracic diameter and cardiothoracic ratio between males and females. CHAPTER TWO 2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW In 1919, Danzer undertook one of the earliest studies of the cardiothoracic ratio. After investigation nearly 500 patients without the aid of hemodynamic parameters, He determined that any measurement over 0.5 or 50% was suspicious and over 0.52or 52% was definitely pathological. A latter report by comeau and white in 1942 found that 15 to 25% of normal patient had a cardiothoracic ratio greater than 0.5 or 50% and advised that using CT ratio prediction labels based upon six, image technique and phase of respiration. A significant relationship was found between the radial measurement and age, which differ within ethnic group groups. The median value of cardiothoracic ratio was 43% in Caucasians, 44% in Asian and 46% in Africans. (Ashcroft Maillsââ¬â¢ and Mekol). Mekol concluded that a single upper limit (e.g. 50%) for cardiothoracic ratio is unsatisfactory. It all subject with values of cardiothoracic ratio greater than 50% in the present sample had been recalled for more dedicated cardio logical investigation; this would have affected 2.2% of Caucasians, 4.1% of Asians and 9.3% of Africans limit of 5.3% in Caucasians, 52% in Asian and 53% in Africans would include 2.2%, 2.4% and 2.6% of each subject of these racial groups. (Mekol1982). Murphy M.L. in 1985 took routine posterior and lateral chest radiograph in 268 patients and analyzed to determine heart size. The coronary artery of this determination was compared with a specific ventricular mass derived from a postmortem cardiac partition technique. The data indicated that in the majority of cases (greater than 70%) a normal sized heart or cardiomegaly can be correctly determined from the chest x ââ¬â ray either by subjective arterial or chamber enlargement or management of the transverse diameter (Murphy M.L. 1985). A recent meta-analysis of 29 studies determined that cardiomegaly on the cardiothoracic ratio was the best reason for predicting a reduced ejection fraction, with a sensitivity and specificity of 51% and 79% respectively (Badgett 1996). Comeau in 1942 said that it is important to recognize compounding factors of cardiomegaly such as an epical fat, a transversely positional heart. An expiratory film or decrease in thoracic width. In 1987, Kabala used a computed Tomography model in eight patients to show how the heart diameter and cardiothoracic ratio might change between anterior-posterior chest radiograph taken on 103 patients without cardiac failure and 106 with cardiac failure. An upper limit of cardio thoracic ratio of 55% and of heart chamber or 165mm in males and 150mm in females was shown to practice useful discrimination between normal and abnormal heart size (Kabala 1987). The cardiothoracic ration thoracic ratio increased with age in both sex but females have longer cardiothoracic ratio than men. Portable films taken in the anterior-posterior and supine position enlarge the appearance of cardiac silhouette (Milne 1988). CHAPTER THREE 3.0 MATERIALS AND METHODS 3.1 SUBJECTS A retrospective study was carried out in the university of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Department of Radiology, and using normal chest radiograph of two hundred and ninety-one (291) patients. 3.2 SAMPLE SELECTION The sample includes the normal chest radiographs taken from 2007-2009. All chest radiographs with abnormal result were excluded from the study. The age, sex from the chest radiographs was obtained. Hypertensive subjects were excluded. 3.3 MEASUREMENT A straight line drawn near the rule meddled of the heart shadow. Another line as in ââ¬Å"aâ⬠from the right heart border to order to the first line was drown. A third line was drown from the left heart co-order furthest from the in the middle of the heart shown as the ââ¬Å"bâ⬠. The two were then added together, the cardiothoracic rube as the own of the line ââ¬Å"aâ⬠and ââ¬Å"bâ⬠divided by the largest transverse internal diameter of the thoracic cage as shown on the figure 3.1 below. Figure 3.1 measurement of the cardio thoracic ratio. Cardiac diameter=A=B are the maximum extensions of the heart to the left and right of the midline respectively. CHAPTER FIVE 5.0 DISCUSSION The cardiothoracic ratio of males and females in the various age groups will be determined in future study. The ratio increased with age in both sexes but was more marked in females than males. Oberman in 1967 reported that women have higher cardiothoracic ratio than males. Men had larger cardiac diameter than women. The higher cardiothoracic ratio in women was due to their smaller thoracic diameter. This report supports the present study. Edge in 1984 also reported that the increase in cardiothoracic ratio with age found particularly in women was mainly due to contraction of the thoracic diameter rather than an increase in the cardiac diameter. Decrease in the chest diameter with advancing age indicates that cardiothoracic ratio over estimates the heart size in the elderly. Nikol and Wade in 1982 attributed that Africans have larger cardiothoracic ratio because they have smaller thoracic diameter and larger cardiac diameter. It was also noted that environmental factors such as poor nutrition and infection may cause cardiac enlargement with resultant increase in cardiac diameter and cardiothoracic ratio. 5.2 CONCLUSION The higher cardiothoracic ratio in females may suggest the reason of their susceptibility to infections arising from the heart and this could be correlated to clinical data. 5.3 RECOMMENDATION I recommend that any research on cardiothoracic ratio is best with chest radiographs. Females should always keep good hygiene because of their susceptibility to infections because of their large cardiothoracic ratio. Annual Report of Alto Metals Limited Free-Samples for Students
Question: In your Evaluation of the Companys Performance, you should take account of Relevant Information in the Annual Reports Explanations for the level of Profits generated from assets and how the level varied annually between 2014 and 2016. Answer: Discussion: The overall assets of Alto Metals are mainly evaluated in the essay, where the companys overall return on assets is being evaluated. The overall annual report of Alto Metals Limited is mainly identified as the most viable document, which depicts the financial position of the company. However, the company mainly aims in discovering and acquiring gold mines for improving its profitability mining company. The company also aims for searching uranium object, which could develop more uranium mining facilities. The company has mainly conducted projects for search new depicts and mining for gold. Moreover, the revenue of the company has mainly increased from 2014; however, a sudden decline was witnessed in 2016. The company does not have any kind of constant revenue, which could support its constant increase in expenditure. The overall return on assets of the company has mainly improved from 2013 to 2016. Where the first ROA was mainly at -11.39%, -44.04%, -97.04% and then in 2016 it reached to -25.82%. This overall return on assets has mainly depicted efficiency of the company to utilise its assets. In addition, the improvement of ROA is mainly identified during 2016, where a decline in retune on assets from -97.04% went to -25.82%. The improvement in return on asset is seen to increase by 73.4% in 2016 as compared to 2015. This mainly suggested that increased improvement depicted by ROA states the effective measures taken by the company to support its activities. Weygandt, Kimmel Kieso (2015) stated that investors by using the return on assets could effective identify efficiency of the company to attain the required revenue by using the same capital. On the other hand, Damodaran (2016) criticises that ROA does not allow the investors to determine the risk associated with investment and only portray t he level of revenue attained by deploying certain fixed assets. The three-asset category and one income statement category could be evaluated, before actually seeing the return on assets of the company. The asset class, which needs effective inspection, are cash, property, and inventories. The evaluation of these three categories is mainly essential by the investors before seeing the return on assets. In addition, the income statement that needs to be evaluated is the sale of goods and products. The overall evaluation of cash, property, and inventories could mainly help the identifying the financial capability of the company. Vogel (2014) mentioned that evaluation of inventory could mainly allow the investor in identify the overall capital blockage in inventory store. On the other hand, Damodaran (2016) criticises that the evaluation of inventory does not allows the investor to detect the actual financial position; instead it helps in depicting ht cash generating capacity of the company. Furthermore, the second category, which needs to be evaluated by the investors in cash and cash equivalents present in Alto Metals Limited. The decrease in overall cash of Alto Metals Limited could be witnessed from 2012 to 2016, which is due to the constant loss incurred by the company during fiscal year. Relevant increase in cash deposited is mainly witnessed in 2016, as compared to 2015, which is due to the rise in profitability of the company. Brigham Ehrhardt (2013) mentioned that high cash availability could mainly allow the company to support its financial obligations in time of need and continue with its operations smoothly. However, Weygandt, Kimmel Kieso (2015) argued that increment in the overall cash availability mainly indicates the non-effective use of recourses, which is been conducted by the company. The fourth category, which needs to be analysed by the company is inventory system. However, Alto Metals Limited does not have any inventory, as it might have no impact on the overall sales of the company. Moreover, the category, which needs to be examined from income statement, is sale of the goods and the products. The evaluation of this category is mainly essential for detecting the overall profitability attained by Alto Metals Limited from 2012 to 2016. The company mainly accommodates other income and does not have any products, which is been sold to customers. The only income, which is been attained by Alto Metals Limited is from other sources. This income mainly stated to increase from 2014, while a relatively decline in revenue could be witnessed from 2015 to 2016. The evaluation of income statement and sales of products mainly allows in adding overall demand for companies products. However, being an exploration and mining company, Alto Metals Limited has still not achieved th e required projects, which could provide relevant income from sales (Deboeck Kohonen, 2013). There is relevant different scale from 1-10, which could be used in valuing the overall return on assets of Alto Metals Limited. In addition, the return on assets of Alto Metals Limited is mainly at -25.82%, which could be rated in the scale of 1. This scale 1 mainly depicts that overall results of retune on assets is very unsatisfactory. This unsatisfactory outcome is mainly due to the negative ROA of Alto Metals Limit. The company has not being conducting any kind of sales from 2012 to 21016, which is mainly declining its ability to utilise its assets. In addition, relative decline in total assets could also be witnessed, which is due to the sales of asset conducted by the company during 2016 fiscal year (Vogel, 2014). There are relevantly no ratios, which could be identified from annual report of Alto Metals Limit in 2016. This financial information of the company has effectively reflected in the real world, as no revenue was generated from operations, which led to loss. The company effectively uses Accounting policies which is been laid down by AASB. There is not significant change in the overall accounting policies. Furthermore, the Director and CEO Reports mainly depict the loses, which is continuously incurred by the company due to non-commencement of adequate operations. There is no limitation of the financial statement of the company as, it complies with all the relevant accounting method, which is been depicted by the AASB (Brigham Ehrhardt, 2013). The Canterbury Tales A Character Sketch Of Chaucers Knight Essays (51
The Canterbury Tales: A Character Sketch of Chaucer's Knight Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, written in approximately 1385, is a collection of twenty-four stories ostensibly told by various people who are going on a religious pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral from London, England. Prior to the actual tales, however, Chaucer offers the reader a glimpse of fourteenth century life by way of what he refers to as a General Prologue. In this prologue, Chaucer introduces all of the characters who are involved in this imaginary journey and who will tell the tales. Among the characters included in this introductory section is a knight. Chaucer initially refers to the knight as "a most distinguished man" (l. 43) and, indeed, his sketch of the knight is highly complimentary. The knight, Chaucer tells us, "possessed/Fine horses, but he was not gaily dressed" (ll. 69-70). Indeed, the knight is dressed in a common shirt which is stained "where his armor had left mark" (l. 72). That is, the knight is "just home from service" (l. 73) and is in such a hurry to go on his pilgrimage that he has not even paused before beginning it to change his clothes. The knight has had a very busy life as his fighting career has taken him to a great many places. He has seen military service in Egypt, Lithuania, Prussia, Russia, Spain, North Africa, and Asia Minor where he "was of [great] value in all eyes (l. 63). Even though he has had a very successful and busy career, he is extremely humble: Chaucer maintains that he is "modest as a maid" (l. 65). Moreover, he has never said a rude thing to anyone in his entire life (cf., ll. 66-7). Clearly, the knight possesses an outstanding character. Chaucer gives to the knight one of the more flattering descriptions in the General Prologue. The knight can do no wrong: he is an outstanding warrior who has fought for the true faith_according to Chaucer_on three continents. In the midst of all this contenton, however, the knight remains modest and polite. The knight is the embodiment of the chivalric code: he is devout and courteous off the battlefield and is bold and fearless on it. In twentieth century America, we would like to think that we have many people in our society who are like Chaucer's knight. During this nation's altercation with Iraq in 1991, the concept of the modest but effective soldier captured the imagination of the country. Indeed, the nation's journalists in many ways attempted to make General H. Norman Schwarzkof a latter day knight. The general was made to appear as a fearless leader who really was a regular guy under the uniform. It would be nice to think that a person such as the knight could exist in the twentieth century. The fact of the matter is that it is unlikely that people such as the knight existed even in the fourteenth century. As he does with all of his characters, Chaucer is producing a stereotype in creating the knight. As noted above, Chaucer, in describing the knight, is describing a chivalric ideal. The history of the Middle Ages demonstrates that this ideal rarely was manifested in actual conduct. Nevertheless, in his description of the knight, Chaucer shows the reader the possibility of the chivalric way of life.

The economy was down and prospects were slim, so getting a foot in the door didnââ¬â¢t look particularly easy. I had also never written a resume before, and given the circumstances, I knew mine needed to be good. Fortunately, I did have some relevant experience built up from working at the student newspaper, tutoring, and various freelance gigs. After doing extensive research online, I did my best to put one together would convince a hiring manager I deserved an opportunity. In order to make sure my efforts were up to par, I made an appointment at the university career center for a resume review. I thought theyââ¬â¢d tear it apart, tell me everything that needed fixing, and send me on my way, ready to spend more time polishing it up. Instead, something else happened. After reading through my cover letter and resume, the student advisor looked up and said, ââ¬Å"This looks really good. In fact, weââ¬â¢re going to use this as an example for other students to follow. Nice work!â⬠That wasnââ¬â¢t the response I expected, but I was glad to take it. This is a 100% true story, and Iââ¬â¢m not sharing it to boast, either. In a word, yes. While LinkedIn is a vital tool for demonstrating your skills and expertise, hiring managers still typically want to see a resume. Itââ¬â¢s a big part of making a good first impression, so itââ¬â¢s important to get yours right. What Makes Getting Your Resume Noticed So Difficult? Hiring managers often have too many to look at. Most of the time, it really is that simple. According to Time, thatââ¬â¢s why the average resume only gets looked at for six seconds. In order to stand out, you have to make yours look exceptional. Avoiding Resume Mistakes There is nothing worse than sinking hours into the perfect job application, only to have your efforts undone by unforced errors, like typos (this is especially important for marketers and writing-based roles). From not catching spelling errors to failing to tailor your resume to the role youââ¬â¢re applying for, Thomas Frankà does an excellent job of summarizing what not to do in this video: What Does an Effective Resume Look Like? Itââ¬â¢s easier to replicate success when you have an example to follow. This template is closely based on one I created myself in college, and have used for the past decade. Itââ¬â¢s clean and simple, but it has worked well in my experience: Here's how to write and format an effective #marketing resumeLater, toward the end of this post, youââ¬â¢ll also see examples from around the web, tailored toward specific marketing disciplines. Depending on the type of role youââ¬â¢re applying for, the format might need to change slightly, or highlight different types of skills. Planning Your Resume Before you start writing, itââ¬â¢s a good idea to prepare all the information youââ¬â¢ll need. Youââ¬â¢ll need to round up previous work-related experience, contact references, summarize your strengths, and more. Know Who Will Be Reading Your Resume Every resume you send should be tailored toward the job youââ¬â¢re applying for. Generally, itââ¬â¢s a good idea to create one generic resume that you can adjust depending on the company or role youââ¬â¢re targeting. This doesnââ¬â¢t have to be rocket science. Start with these tips: Read the companyââ¬â¢s website. This will give you an idea what theyââ¬â¢re like. Research the company. What can you find out about them from news articles, blogs, or other third-party sources? Give their front desk a call or send an email. When it comes time to write a cover letter, it helps to address it to the right person. Find out who that is by making a quick inquiry (if that information isnââ¬â¢t easily available on a job listing). Recommended Reading: How to Structure Modern Marketing Departments for Success Round Up References and Employment History If youââ¬â¢re new in your career, this may be a challenge if you donââ¬â¢t have much experience to lean on. When you submit a resume, include references on a separate sheet. Include the following information for each person: Name Company Job Title Phone Number Email Address Make sure you have permission to list each person on your application, so they arenââ¬â¢t surprised to get a phone call about you. Using people as references without permission is a major faux pas. Location. Location. Location. This step matters most if youââ¬â¢re applying for a job in another state or city, and will need to relocate. There are varying schools of thought on this, but this post will argue itââ¬â¢s best to be honest. Consider the following: If the job is within a commutable distance, use your own address. If youââ¬â¢d need to travel a longer distance for an interview, state that in your cover letter. If you can, consider using a friend or relativeââ¬â¢s address in the city. Formatting Your Resume So, what should this thing look like? Itââ¬â¢s an important question, and there are a handful of minor tweaks you can implement to improve formatting. Step 1. Pay Attention to Font Choices There are two types of fonts to pay attention to here: serifà and sans-serif. The graphic below illustrates the differences between the two: Source: Source: https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-serif-and-sans-serif-typefaces There are key differences between serif and sans-serif fonts, and how they affect readability: According to Harshita Arora, sans-serif fonts offer a slight boost in readability. Thatââ¬â¢s why I used a sans-serif font on mine. Too many fonts is considered a negative for readability. Again, mine only uses one font (just in different formatting and sizing here and there). Using serif fonts isnââ¬â¢t going to ruin your resume if youââ¬â¢d really like to use them. Youââ¬â¢ll probably still get hired. But, for ease of reading and skimming, limit yourself to two fonts, and lean toward sans-serif. Recommended Reading: How to Work With Designers With Authentic Advice From 's Designer Step 2: Consider Narrower Margins for Wider Sentence Length Resumes need to include a lot of information in very little space (ideally, within one page). One way to squeeze in more detail about yourself while retaining a clean look is to use narrow margins. This helps you fit more text per line. If youââ¬â¢re using Microsoft Word, you can easily set wider margins by clicking on the Layout tab: Next, click Margins. Then, select Narrow: This is how the template included in this post sets its margins. Step 4: Use Bold Text Selectively Bolded text can help important elements of your resume stand out. Consider bolding items such as: Your college and major/minor. Previous companies and job titles. Thatââ¬â¢s about it. Too much bolding can easily look obnoxious. Writing Your Resume Youââ¬â¢re finally ready to start doing some actual writing. Hereââ¬â¢s how to make sure you nail it. Step 1: Put Your Contact Information at the Top A hiring manager will need to know the best way to contact you, and where to find more information about yourself and qualifications. Make their job easier by including each of these items: Name: Include your full name. Street Address: See the previous tip on location. Email Address: Use something that sounds professional. yourname@gmail.comà looks better than party_guy_2000@yahoo.comà or something else embarrassing. Twitter Bio: This is considered essential for a good number of marketing jobs. Only share it here if you tweet about topics relevant to marketing, or the companyââ¬â¢s industry where youââ¬â¢re applying. Portfolio: If you have an online portfolio, add a link here. You can also replace this with a blog or personal website URL, if itââ¬â¢s relevant to marketing. Some of this information is obvious. Other things like Twitter bios and portfolios, though, can be small enhancements that help you stick out as a candidate (as long as your social media presence is relevant and your portfolio is up to par). #Marketing #resume tip: include your contact information (along with your Twitter handle and...Step 2: Next, Include Your Education History In most cases, this will mean your college or university. Only list your high school if you didnââ¬â¢t attend college (no judgment hereI know people who have done well in digital marketing without attending or going into post-secondary education). Include the following: The type of degree you received: This means a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS, or an Associates (AA). Your major and minor: This may be formatted differently depending on the details of your degree programs. For example, my degree was in Mass Communications, with an Emphasis in Print Journalism and Public Relations. Next, list your college:à Also include the month and year you graduated (or plan to graduate). A word about grade-point averages: in my experience, most marketing hiring managers donââ¬â¢t prioritize them. While high academic achievement reflects well on your work ethic, itââ¬â¢s your skills that are going to get you hired. So, should you bother listing your GPA? If your GPA is particularly strong, or you earned academic honors, then include them. Plus, if youââ¬â¢re in college and applying for a highly competitive internship, an employer may set a GPA threshold for applicants. If your grades werenââ¬â¢t great, youââ¬â¢re not doomed, as long as your portfolio demonstrates talent. Recommended Reading: How to Create an Awesome Online Course By Repurposing Old Content Step 3: List Professional Awards If youââ¬â¢re active in your community, or have a little bit of work-related experience, you may have been recognized for your efforts. Some examples might include: Academic honors for high-performing marketing students. Awards from professional or student organizations. Business and civic associations. Even if its not directly related to marketing, any sort of educational, business, or professional development awards youââ¬â¢ve earned are great ways to help you stand out. Step 4: Include Previous Speaking Engagements If you get the opportunity to speak at an industry event, take advantage of it. Itââ¬â¢s a great way to share your knowledge, and you often learn more about your topic by trying to explain it to others. They also show a willingness to volunteer your time to help others, and indicate a high level of competency in the field. Donââ¬â¢t have anything to put here? No worries. Just consider this tip something to think about. Have you spoken at an industry event? Include details on your resume.Step 5: Lay Out Your Most Relevant Technical Skills Once the general ââ¬Å"about yourselfâ⬠content is completed, itââ¬â¢s time to get down to your capabilities. If youââ¬â¢ve gone through college, have some work experience, or have a relevant side hustle, then you have some skills. However, itââ¬â¢s important to prioritize the ones that are most relevant to the job youââ¬â¢re applying for, and the ones where youââ¬â¢re most proficient. Here are some examples of skills you might need: Writing. Research. Proficiency with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. SEO. Data analysis. Branding. Campaign strategy. HTML/CSS. Adobe CC (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) This is a general list, but you get the idea. The specific skills you might need to develop or highlight will depend on the specific type of role youââ¬â¢re applying for as well, which this post will cover later on. Now, what if youââ¬â¢re making a career change and donââ¬â¢t have what you think is relevant experience? In that case, itââ¬â¢s time to get creative, and determine how your existing skill set might transfer. Here are some examples: Are you a skilled researcher? Has your past work experience required a heavy amount of writing or design? Do you know how to analyze data and extract meaningful insights from it? Is project management and organized teams an area of strength for you? Then, work your way backward chronologically. If you have too many to list, or if youââ¬â¢re applying for a senior role where you have lots of experience (say, maybe 10 years or more), then consider adding a second page to your resume. Otherwise, choose other areas to trim down, or include just your top three or four jobs. Be sure to include: Company. Job Title. Employment Dates. Once you have the basic information out of the way, add your responsibilities and accomplishments. While a hiring manager will want to know what you had on your plate at a past job, theyââ¬â¢ll be more impressed with what you actually achieved. So, make your experience stand out by doing this: Make it clear how your work positively impacted the business. Use statistics. ââ¬Å"Increased traffic by 75% and conversions by 8%â⬠sounds better than ââ¬Å"Increased traffic and conversions.â⬠Illustrate times where youââ¬â¢ve shown initiative. Maybe there was a problem you solved, or a major win you scored for the company without being asked.
